WOB - WÖHR Optical Bonding

Perfect displays thanks to advanced bonding technology

The Richard WÖHR GmbH is a leading supplier and manufacturer for Optical-Bonding-Solutions,
who offer a variety of advantages for the Displaytechnology. This innovative technology uses highly

transparent adhesives such as LOCA (Liquid Optical Clear Adhesive) OCA (Optically Clear Adhesive)

and OCF (Optical Clear Film), to bond the various componets such as glass, touch sensor and display

with each other, resulting in significantly improved optical perception and enhanced mechanical properties.

Improved readability and contrast:
Contrast is increased by reducing reflections and stray light, which leads to an improved
readability of the display, especially when exposed to direct light. The contrast ratio is optimized,
to improve the display of content in different environments. Displays, which are modified in the WOB
(WÖHR Optical Bonding) process, are sundreadable depending on their design and offer readability
even in bright ambient light.

Stability and longevity:
The use of high-quality adhesives and the precise bonding process of the WÖHR Optical Bonding
ensure high mechanical stability and resistance to shocks and vibrations. Displays are impact proof
and remain stable and reliable even under demanding conditions, especially for outdoor applications.
The increased IP-Protection and IK-Protection also ensure Resistance to water,

dust and mechanical influences.

Improved touch-experience:
The use of Touch sensors in conjunction with WÖHR Optical Bonding leads to a more responsive and

precise touch experience. The touch sensor is connected directly to the display glass, which improves

touch sensitivity and accuracy.

Efficient processes and clean room production:
The Bonding of displays at WÖHR takes place in specially equipped cleanrooms, to ensure the highest

standards of cleanliness and precision. Dry bonding and liquid bonding are common methods, which can

be used depending on requirements and materials.

Environmentally friendly solutions:
WÖHR Optical Bonding contributes to the reduction of energy consumption, as the improved readability

enables a lower brightness setting. In addition, the display assemblies are more durable, which leads to

less material waste and a longer service life of the devices. The high brightness option of

WÖHR Optical Bonding also offers improved brightness for demanding applications.

Versatile applications:
WÖHR Optical Bonding technology is used in a wide range of industries, including medicine, digital signage,

automation, mobility and more. Whether in the cockpit of an aircraft, in a medical device or in an

outdoor display - Optical Bonding optimizes the performance and functionality of your displays in any environment.

An overview of the Optical Bonding process

The term Optical Bonding has become more and more common in technical terminology in recent years.
and means the optically highly transparent bonding of transparent substrates and / or components.

For a better overview, we have created various groupings here:

Optical Bonding-1:

Optical Bonding-1

The optically highly transparent connection of transparent substrates such as
Glass / Glass,
Glass / Touch
or Glass / functional Layer (e. g. PDLC, prisms...)
There are various technologies for this, which are often categorized as Drybonding (OCA) and Wetbonding (LOCA).

  • Optical Clear Adhesiven (OCA) process
  • Liquid Optical Clear Bonding (LOCA) process
  • Optical Clear Foil Prozess (OCF, EVA, PVB, SGP) process
  • Air Gap Bonding (AGP)

Optical Bonding-2:

Optical Bonding-2

The optically highly transparent connection of transparent substrates and a display technology
(TFT, O-LED, E-Paper...) e.g. Glass / Display or Touch laminate / Display

  • Air Gap Bonding (AGP)
  • Optical Clear Adhesiven (OCA) process
  • Liquid Optical Clear bonding (LOCA) process

In order to name and compare all technologies, Air Gap Bonding „AGP“ was also taken into account

This is a common process for mounting displays behind glass. Furthermore, these processes must
also be considered from other perspectives:

Industries:

There are industries in which Optical Bonding offers more than just visual advantages, e.g. food,
GMP, cleanroom and pharmaceuticals. In the event of an external defect, the glass is bonded and cannot cause any
contamination.

Outdoor application:

The readability in direct sunlight can be realised with significantly less light density of the display unit.

Reflections from entry and exit surfaces are reduced to a minimum. Type and design of the
mechanics: the optically bonded units generally no longer need extra mechanical protection (depending on the project).

This cost saving must be taken into account in an overall assessment.

Waste heat from the components:
Thanks to the Optical Bonding process, lower luminance levels are required to provide the same display experience
resulting in lower energy consumption and thermal management measures.

Temperature changes / condensation effects:
Can be reliably prevented in the display area by the Optical Bonding process.

Advantages that can be achieved with optical bonding:

Your Advantages:

Reduced reflections. By sticking together the glass plates light refraction is reduced and the contrast increased. Therefore better readability without higher power consumption even in case of critical lighting conditions.

Longer service life. By closing the isolating air gap between the glass plates heat can escape to the outside, therefore a better heat dissipation is created. .

No condensation. As there is no air gap between glass plate and touch screen or display, no moisture can penetrate and settle out, condensation is excluded..

Higher robustness. A bonded design is more stable and resistant against mechanical loads, thus the device becomes generally more robust.

Dust-free execution. The clean room production prevents the inclusion of particles. This means: no resulting optical interference.

Improved apperance. The user has an optimised display quality with an improved
appearance of the device.

WÖHR offers its own Optical Bonding service

To this end, we have evaluated and installed process methods for both liquid (LOCA) and solid (OCA) materials.
The selection depends on the requirements and is carried out under Cleanroom conditions.

This service is available independently or as a supplement for various displays. In addition, we have
extensive experience in the qualification and procurement of displays.
